The Backbone of Mining Operations: The Mighty Conveyor Chain 2
 May 06, 2024|View:2308

In the vast and complex mining world, conveyor chains are quietly but tirelessly transporting materials across expansive distances. Human mining activities originated thousands of years ago and emerged on a large scale after the First Industrial Revolution. During this mining evolution, humans have designed different chains adapting to local conditions.

We have talked about the versatility and customization of mining conveyor chains, that manufacturers /suppliers offer a diverse range of options that cater to unique operational environments. Thus, ensuring their performance and longevity. Technological advancements have led to changes in mining conveyor chains in recent years, features such as maintenance free roller chains (self-lubricating bushings), widespread use of plastics, and precision machined components, prolonging service intervals and reducing maintenance downtime.

The chain bushing is a protective component of chains, which can reduce the friction and wear between chain plates and pins. Self-lubricating bushings, used in some chain manufacturing are also known as sintered bushings. Sintered bushings use materials and processes that result in coarse pore structure. This happens when the metal powder is pressed into shape and solidified at high temperatures. The pore structure is the secret to the self-lubricating work, these bores are filled with lubricating oil, and most of the oil can be retained in the pores at room temperature. When receiving friction, lubricating oil escapes from the bore andis dispersed on the surface of pins, creating a lubrication interface, which will eventually disengage pins from the contact surface and protect them from wear and tear. These bushings offer:

Self lubrication capacity

Extremely long life

Anti-wear and low-friction attributes

Save purchasing costs and maintenance costs

Environmentally friendly

High performance plastics have gradually occupied an important position in mining applications. Most notably is UHMW with desirable properties contribute to a wide range of customized parts, like sprockets, gears, belt rollers, scrapers, guides, and other conveyor parts. Whether on the surface open or underground mining operations, UHMW’s self-lubricity solves problems around sticking, friction, and is unaffected by dust and dirt buildup. Its high wear resistance and impact resistance also prove its position in mining industry applications. UHMW’s hydrophobicity (moisture resistant properties) make itself stable in wet or frozen operations, with excellent corrosion resistance brings a longer service life. With so many excellent properties and lower weight and cost than steel, UHMW deserves to be favored by manufacturers.

As environmental awareness continues to rise, mining industry faces increasing pressure to minimize ecological disturbance.  The addition of artificial intelligence and automated transportation, has optimized conveying performance and improved efficiency and reliability. At the same time, advances in material science reduce energy consumption and environmental pollution. These innovations empower mines to adapt rapidly to evolving market dynamics. Looking ahead, the future of mining conveyor chainsappears promising, driven by advanced material science, automation, and digitalization.
